FP7 NanoSustain Dissemination Event

Date:
Mon, 2011-12-05
Location:
Glasgow
Country:
United Kingdom

This event will provide an insight into the nanosafety research and coordination efforts on both the UK and European levels and offer a chance for attendees to learn about the exciting preliminary results of one such nanosafety project, NanoSustain. Speakers will include representatives of the UK Health & Safety Executive, UK University Safety and Health Association, and NANOfutures initiatives. Attendees will be encouraged to participate through a panel discussion on the current status of European nanosafety research and coordination and its future development.

The NanoSustain project is focusing on the development of innovative solutions for the sustainable design, use, recycling and final treatment of nanotechnology-based products. This will be achieved by a comprehensive data gathering and generation of relevant missing data, as well as their evaluation and validation, for specific nano-products or product groups in relation to their human health and environmental hazards and possible impacts that may occur during after-production stages. Although production of nano-materials is rapidly increasing, our knowledge about possible health and environmental effects associated with these materials is still rather poor. NanoSustain is specifically investigating the use of carbon nanotube plastic composites, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and nanocellulose in a number of manufactured products.
